Great Rehabilitation Place. This is a Skilled Rehabilitation Facility that offers private rehab suites just around the corner from Penrose Main Hospital. This facility really understands the total rehabilitation process by even allowing pets to stay during the rehab program in order to make the patient more comfortable. Keep up the good work!
Treates patients as feebel, helpless, and incompetent even when they are not.
I was a patient at the Springs Village Care Center for 10 days in October 2006. The reason was that after I was discharged from the hospital after being treated for a broken leg (the result of a motorcycle accident), I had no other place to go for a while since I lived in Albuquerque, 400 miles away, and couldn't travel yet.
The problem I had with Springs Village was not with inadequate care, but with their persisting in treating me as though I was compeletely helpless, feeble, and incompetent. I found that insulting and degrading.
At the hospital, I was able to get around quite well on crutches about 14 hours after surgery yet when I was transfered to Springs Valley 4 days later, they would not let me have crutches, so I had to use a walker or wheel chair. Please note that even though I was a 68 year old man, I was very strong and fit and had regularly worked out in a gym. I was capable of climbing a rope using only my arms. Even though I could quite easily get to the bathroom myself, they insisted, in spite of my protests, in hanging a urinal on my bed. Daily they asked me if I had brushed my teeth, as though I was incompetent to do even that.
The few times during my 10 day stay that I was permitted to take a shower, they put a teather on me in case I fell, even though I was very strong. Then, to take a shower, I had to sit on a toilet seat that was mounted on a wheeled frame, and be wheeled into the shower!!! They assumed that my broken leg made me incontinent. The female aid watched me wash EVERY part of my body. By contrast, at the hospital, I could shower by myself.
The way I was treated tended to undermine my self-confidence and question my ability to look after myself. When I left after 10 days, they told me that I wasn't ready to leave and should stay longer!!! And, after leaving, I found that I was quite able to do things myself that Springs Valley did not permit me to do, including taking a shower by myself.
